It’s not every day that a jazz singer makes it out of the local-smoke-filled-jazz-clubs onto the international stage of stardom. Jose James is in the midst of doing just that, all while making music that transcends generations as well as culture. His music lands on its own island somewhere in between the continents of Roberta Flack and Anthony Hamilton, just south of D’angelo and west of Donny Hathaway.
This first thing you should know and love about his 4th album, No Beginning No End, is that it was recorded with a live band. It seems the further popular music darts forward with electronic and synthesized sounds, the more refreshing the tune of a good old fashion live bands become. James has performed on both David Letterman and Conan shows, and seems to have the attention of the right people in the music industry.
