Solange is a rising star in the pop world. Does she look familiar, even? Well, it’s of note that she does share the same last name of one of the most popular divas of our time – Knowles. That’s right, we’re talking about Beyoncé. Solange is the younger sister of the aforementioned superstar. But don’t let that fool you, she’s not simply walking in the footsteps of her sibling. She’s moving to the beat of her own drum, especially on her new EP, True.

While definitely R&B tinged, she is testing the water and experimenting with different sounds and compositions – similar to contemporary Frank Ocean. Where her debut album Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams, harkened back to 60s and 70s-era Motown, True has more of a revamped, 80s new wave and pop feel. This new direction was likely stemmed by her frequent collaborations over the last few years with bands and artists of varying genres – from Chromeo to of Montreal to Dirty Projectors. Something all these bands have in common? A blend of retro and future sounds, similar to this EP.

It’s also of note that the songs on True were co-written and produced by Dev Hynes, who has an excellent project of his own called Blood Orange. You can definitely hear his influence and unique dance-worthy guitar style throughout.
